Ben Gerber

Intramural Sand Volleyball

For my co-curricular activity, I attended intramural sand-volleyball. Its where all IPFW students are invited to attend and play volleyball. All different races, genders, and skill levels are encouraged to come. At first when I started I got a team together that I knew everyone. Then people couldn’t make it and other people started subbing in and now I have a different team than I had before. I was not sure if I wanted to start attending co-curricular activities, but I like intramurals now. It lets me have a good time with other people in my major. Now we get together and study sometime and it getting us all more active with school related activities. Not sure what else I am suppose to put in this journal.

Intramural Indoor volleyball

Volleyball is an intense sport that requires skill in coordination, balance, and agility. I choose for one of my co-curricular activities to participate in intramural indoor volleyball. I was actually the team captain and got a team together and entered into the intramural league. In my previous journal entry I talked about sand volleyball. This is not in sand but in a gym. Where jumping is not as difficult, the ball is a little heavier, and you have six people on a team and not just four. Upon getting there, I jumped in a scrap game to warm up. After meeting new people and getting to play volleyball with them. I got my team together and we started our matches. It was a lot of fun and very challenging to play other IPFW students.

  Comedian

There was free food in walb one day, so naturally I was attracted to the event. I then found out that there was a comedian for the student’s entertainment. I was not so appeased by the sound of that, but I sat down for a little bit and waited for him to start. Apparently this guy was on the last comic standing but got rejected. So ten minutes after he started in I had to get to class. I took my food and then ran to class. Class just happened to get out early, so I went back just to see if he was still there. To my surprise he was still onstage, there was quite a crowd there too. I happen to see my friends from classes and sat down with them. It ended up being enjoyable and I had a good time and laugh at the comedian.

Prom activites

One day I was walking to the subway in the basement of kettler. As I came through the doors I notice a massive crowd of people mobbed around a table. I did happen to see a tall stack of pizza boxes towering over the people at the table. I walked around to see what was going on and met some classmates that were in line. They ask me to join them in getting free pizza, a t-shirt promoting IPFW’s prom and voting on the prom king and queen. So I stuck in line to participate in the school activities and get the free food and shirt. The more I participate in these college activities, the more involved I want to be.

IHOP hangout The last co-curricular activity that I am going to write about is our learning community hangout. Two different times we invited out class to go to ihop at 11 pm and eat food and hang out. Afterwards we came back to someone’s dorm on campus. It was even beneficial to our group project sometimes. Other things we did were play guitar hero three and sat around and talked. It was a very enjoyable time and we are planning on doing it again.

Life is made up of a series of relationships with people you come in contact with and communication is how you relate to these people. Communication affects every relationship of our life and it is essentially the way we connect to people. If it were not for communication how would we be involved in relationships? Nonverbal communication, eye contact, touch, body language, verbal communication, laughter, talking, allow you to involve yourself with other people.Communication affects relationships in many different ways, whether it is verbal conversations or active listening. Communication is an essential aspect of any relationship whether it is a romantic relationship or a friendship. Different relationships require different forms of communication and listening. Expressing our wants, feelings, thoughts and opinions clearly and effectively is only half of the communication process needed for interpersonal effectiveness. The other half is listening and understanding what others communicate to us. When a person decides to communicate with another person, he/she does so to fulfill a need. The person wants something, feels discomfort, and/or has feelings or thoughts about something. In deciding to communicate, the person selects the method, which he/she believes, will effectively deliver the message to the other person. The code used to send the message can be either verbal or nonverbal. When the other person receives the coded message, they go through the process of interpreting it into understanding and meaning. Effective communication exists between two people when the receiver interprets and understands the sender’s message in the same way the sender intended it.Can one have a relationship without communication; is it even possible to live without some form of communication? Listening is an important form of communication; while one person is talking, in order to be a form of communication the other must be listening. However, the level of listening will tell how much you get out of the relationship. Listening is not just physically hearing a person speak words; it is actively engaging in the conversation and working on having complete understanding. It is hearing the words that a person is speaking and taking them in and making meaning of them.Communication affects relationships in every aspect because without communication people would not know what the other person is feeling or wants or where the relationship is going. Listening is a process that needs to be practiced because it is receiving messages, selecting them, and organizing the information into comprehensive understanding. There are many forms of listening, some of which are defensive, selective, and pseudolistening. They are all listening for very different purposes and with different intentions of understanding. Defensive listening is taking what a person is saying and perceiving it to be an attack toward you, even though it is not about or towards you at all. Often times one has a preconceived notion about how the person views them and therefore they go into defense mode while listening to them speak even if it’s a just a general comment like “What are you up to tonight?” Someone that was being a defensive listener might take that as, the person thinking that they are going to do something bad tonight and they will go into a defensive mode and say, “Why do you want to know? Or why do you care?”. While selective listening is only hearing a particular part of the conversation. Almost everyone partakes in selective listening at some point in his or her life. Whether it is only hearing your mom say, “ You can go out,” instead of hearing “ After you clean your room, you can go out.” Or one stops listening to parts of a conversation that are criticizing towards them of that they feel with go against what they want to get out of the conversation. However, it is important to listen effectively to everything that the communicator is trying to relay. Cutting out sections of the message can only leave one with a biased and unreliable implication. This can cause conflicts to be very difficult to resolve because one need to listen to the message that is being given and then communicate back to the other in order to come to some conclusion. Another form of listening that can be disruptive to solving a conflict is pseudolistening. Not only is this form of listening disrespectful it can really be difficult to come up with a solution to the conflict. Any relationship that is having problems or conflicts needs to be involved in communication and listening, and if one person ignores the other the problem cannot be resolved.Another concept that is essential to communication is mindfulness. Zoning in on what’s being said is very important. It shows that you respect the person who’s talking to you. This zoning in process is called mindfulness. When you are mindful you pay attention to what’s being said in spur of the moment; your mind doesn’t wander. Also you just listen to what’s being said before you state your opinion or ideas. The speaker shouldn’t be interrupted when speaking; this is selfish and shows no respect to the speaker. Mindfulness enhances communication by better informing us of what the speaker thinks or feels about what they’re talking about so we can have better input in the conversation and keep it going instead of using boring minimal encouragers. We’ve all used minimal encouragers when we’re bored of the speaker or the conversation itself. But always remember that that’s not being mindful at all, because being mindful is actually being engaged in the conversation. Conflicts can sometimes arise from not being mindful in relationships. People feel out of the loop if their partner in the relationship is not mindful towards them when they speak. This can cause overt and covert conflicts. This can happen a lot between partners depending on how good the relationship is. Mindfulness is key in avoiding conflicts between partners because it shows respect in the other person.Covert conflict is a difficulty in relationships that comes from the simple fact that not all of us humans can read minds. When some event occurs and things are said, people always have a reaction that might either be an acknowledgement of the other person, or it could be held inside of the recipient. If the reaction is positive, then people often laugh and everything is pleasant in the relationship at hand. However, things may turn bad with a negative reaction that can be discussed and resolved. In either case, if feelings aren’t expressed, there is no way of knowing how to react or proceed in a relationship other than by trying to get the other person to talk.Regardless of whether the feelings and reactions are expressed directly after the event or not, the feeling still exist with-in the recipient. These bottled feelings then are liable to show themselves in different ways sometimes not related to the actual argument. For example, if a couple has an argument about what one said about the other’s friend, maybe the boy would not want to go to a movie with the girl, or the girl might express neglect in further conversations. In either situation, none of the mental energy is going towards actually solving the argument. This effectively drags the initial negativity out far longer than it should.Because the argument drags on for an extended period of time, feelings often accumulate and effectively make the argument far worse than it was. After a long enough period of indirect aggression and avoidance of the main issue, eventually people reach a breaking point. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, or in some cases death. Therefore, it is important to have mindfulness when observing a person’s behavior and to make a conflict overt as soon as possible to prevent serious side-effects.All these many different forms of listening play a vital role in relationships and solving conflicts within those relationships. While all these forms of listening are examples of things that need to be changed within a conversation, they are important. If people do not realize that they are not listening correctly or effectively then they will not be able to correct the problems. Listening effectively is important in relationships and dealing with hardships within the relationships. Once people learn to listen genuinely and not for only specific things that they want to hear or to defend themselves then relationships can grow and conflicts can be easily resolved. That is when the relationship will truly be able to reach its potential: when the people in it can be completely focused on the communication within the relationship.

Life is made up of a series of relationships with people you come in contact with and communication is how you relate to these people. Communication affects every relationship of our life and it is essentially the way we connect to people. If it were not for communication how would we be involved in relationships? Nonverbal communication, eye contact, touch, body language, verbal communication, laughter, talking, how else to you involve yourself with other people.

Communication affects relationships in many different ways, whether it is verbal conversations or active listening. Effective communication exists between two people when the receiver interprets and understands the sender’s message in the same way the sender intended it.

Can one have a relationship without communication; is it even possible to live without some form of communication? Listening is an important form of communication; while one person is talking, in order to be a form of communication the other must be listening. However, the level of listening will tell how much you get out of the relationship. Listening is not just physically hearing a person speak words; it is actively engaging in the conversation and working on having complete understanding. It is hearing the words that a person is speaking and taking them in and making meaning of them.

Communication affects relationships in every aspect because without communication people would not know what the other person is feeling or wants or where the relationship is going.

Any relationship that is having problems or conflicts needs to be involved in communication and listening, and if one person ignores the other the problem cannot be resolved.

All these many different forms of listening play a vital role in relationships and solving conflicts within those relationships. That is when the relationship will truly be able to reached its potential and engage in mindfulness and being completely focused on the communication within the relationship.

The speaker shouldn’t be interrupted when speaking; this is selfish and shows no respect to the speaker.Mindfulness enhances communication by better informing us of what the speaker thinks or feels about what they’re talking about so we can have better input in the conversation and keep it going instead of using boring minimal encouragers. We’ve all used minimal encouragers when we’re bored of the speaker or the conversation itself. It’s ok though we’re all human. But always remember that that’s not being mindful at all because being mindful is actually being engaged in the conversation. As I said before.Conflicts can sometimes arise from not being mindful in relationships. People feel out of the loop if their partner in the relationship is not mindful towards them when they speak. This can cause overt and covert conflicts. This can happen a lot between partners depending on how good the relationship is. Mindfulness is key in avoiding conflicts between partners because it shows respect in the other person.

alisha latham

I went to see Denise Haskin aka “Mr. Belding” speak. I was wondering around campus one day and a bunch of people were going in and out of Walb Ballroom so i decided to check it out. They were serving free food and people were all over just hanging out talking and waiting i guess for the speaker. So i went in and sat down just to see what was going on. Then an announcer said that his flight was late and that it would be about half an hour late and i did not have anything better to do so i waited around.

I sat around made small talk with the people around me to pass the time. After awhile he got in from the airport and the presentation was getting ready to being. I was oddly surprised when he started out asking us if we had questions for him to talk about. So many people chimed in and asked what they wanted to know. He was a fun speaker that was constantly keeping the audience involved and talking to us about life and choices through his examples instead of talking above us like many speakers tend to do.

He talked about his dreams and was very convincing and sincere about us following our own dreams. He talked about not letting anyone or anything get in the way of your dreams. To follow your heart and let it guide you to happiness and success. He played trivia with the crowd and it was just and all around great presentation.

I am really glad i went and that the events played out as they did because i met a bunch of people while we were waiting for him to arrive some of which i have actually become really good friends with. I also loved that he was willing to stay and sign autographs for as long as people were there and it was a long line. He was a genuinely nice guy and a great motivational speaker that really connected with college level students.
